ANU PENNANEN

IN RELIEF #2

Sound walk

(Helsinki, Finland)

The artist invites visitors to take an autonomous walk through the recreation center of DK Gaza, wearing headphones. The starting point for the creation of the work was the relief on the facade of the building, created by the sculptor L.A. Dietrich in the 30s, now in a state of decay. Instead of making another monumental gesture in the great city of palaces and statues, the audio piece speaks of small, fleeting everyday moments passing every day in all corners of the building. Each visitor will have their own individual itinerary, filled with personal associations.

Anu Pennanen's intervention IN RELIEF #2 departs from an audio recording made by the artist on the DK Gaza site to imagine, in collaboration with the musician Vladislav Delay, an immersive sound work that evokes the history of the building, its present state and speculative forms of possible futures.

Portrait Anu Pennanen.JPG

Anu Pennanen is a Finnish visual artist and filmmaker who creates cinematic narratives with people situated or living in alienating architectural structures of power. Urban spaces serve as backdrops for events acted by people, over a given period of time. Film and sound are used as a reflexive medium and productive space to re-negotiate with reality. Anu Pennanen has been exhibiting widely internationally since 2004: CCA Glasgow, CAC Vilnius, Centre Pompidou, Montehermoso Cultural Center, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Manifesta 5 Donostia San Sebastián, Ars Baltica Triennale, Grand Café Saint-Nazaire, KunstenFestival des Arts Brussels and Kiasma Museum Helsinki, among others. Film Festivals: Rotterdam, Hamburg, Barcelona, Glasgow, Kassel DocFest and KINO DER KUNST München.
